It is important to note that autism is diagnosed detecting the presence of a set of behaviors in the areas of communication, socialization, behavior and sensory integration.

A person may present some of these behaviors more strongly and other moderately.

Communication

  • May never have spoken.
  • Is common that the person spoke for about a year and a half and then stopped.
  • May occasionally say a single word.
  • Is common that he or she finds hard to speak in first person i.e., says, "likes lollypop" instead of "I want a lollypop".
  • Sometimes it costs to modulate the voice.

Social Interaction / Games

  • It is common for them to find it hard to interact with others, he or she isolates or interacts in a rare and unusual way.
  • Usually they don’t play like other children.
  • It is common that their attention focuses on brightly colored toys or toys that make loud noises.
  • He or she can show interest for some parts of a toy or objects, such as trolley wheels or the blades of a fan.

Conduct

  • They run from side to side sometimes.
  • They flap their hands or go up and down the stairs repeatedly.
  • It is common that they have some difficulty sleeping.
  • They may laugh for no apparent reason.
  • It can be difficult to change their routine or adapt to new situations.
  • Usually they do inexplicable tantrums.
  • They can have amazing abilities to solve puzzles or in using electronic equipment.

Sensorial Integration

  • They may be irritated by noises.
  • They might not like trying new foods.
  • It is common that they don´t tolerate certain textures, or that they touch certain objects constantly.
  • Tends to bite or chew on some objects.
  • They can be watching intensely at spinning objects or reflective surfaces.
